Welcome to Year Five!

In Year Five we hope to always 'be the best that we can be!'

On this page we will share with you some of the activities which we have completed in class, along with any news or exciting events which take place.

Watch this space ...

Homework is handed out each Friday and due in on Wednesday.

Spellings are given out each Wednesday and tested on Monday.

P.E. this half term is Tuesday  - remember your full P.E. kit!

Regular reading is extremely important - read your home reading book, a little each night!  Also try to find books that you love and READ THEM FOR PLEASURE!

Maya Workshop

We have really enjoyed a hands on workshop led by a real Maya archaeologist today!

Sculpture Art Workshop

We had an online workshop to create our own penguin sculptures linked to our topic of Antarctica. The results were fantastic!

World Book Day!

Year 5 have enjoyed lots of book activities today! They came dressed as a word. Can you guess which word they came as?

The Flying Scotsman

Year 5 have been invited to take part in a day of engagement when the Flying Scotsman visits Bury in March. Today we found out about the history of the Flying Scotsman, Railway Safety and we also dressed up in some of the Railway staff's uniforms!

History workshop by the National Archives

Today Year 5 enjoyed an online workshop by the National Archives finding out how historians use documents to find out about black Victorians. We used census records, photographs, newspaper articles and theatre reviews to discover clues about the lives of these Victorians.

P.E. - Dance

This half term we have been having Dance lessons.  We have had a great time - learning and perfecting new routines, creating our own moves and sequences and even cheerleading!

Remembrance Day is held on the 11th November every year.  It is also known as Armistice Day.  At 11:00am on 11th November 1918, the countries involved in the First World War agreed to stop fighting.  This marked the end of the First World War.

The first Remembrance Day ever was held on 11th November 1919.

Every year, at 11:00am on 11th November people all over the United Kingdom take part in a two minute silence.

Remembrance Day gives people the chance to remember those who have fought and lost their lives during wars and allows us to honour their memory.  It makes sure that we never forget the past, and that those who died, didn't die in vain.

We created some Remembrance Day artwork and sent it to the residents (our friends) at Alexander Care Home.

Our friends from Alexander Care Home also sent us something special to help us REMEMBER, along with a lovely letter.  We have placed them on our prayer table.

We designed and made our own bread rolls.

Here are our finished products.  We took them home for a taste test and then evaluated them at school the next day!

HISTORY - The Romans in Britain

In History this half term we are learning about the Romans in Britain.

On Thursday 13th October 2022 we went to Chester for the day and had a full Roman experience!  It was a fantastic day and we all learnt even more that we already knew!

In Year Five, we will be making our very own bread as part of our Design Technology work.

So far we have found out and researched the well-known bakers - Warburtons.

We have also done our very own market research, tasting lots of different types of bread, to find out the most popular in our class.

We have also tasted lots of different ingredients so we can decide what we want to put in our own bread rolls - YUM!

Every year, on 21st September, we celebrate International Day of Peace.

The theme this year is:

End Racism. Build Peace.

Year 5 will start their weekly flute lessons his year, with specialist teachers from Bury Music Service.

It won't be long before they can take their flutes home to practise ...

Enjoy the peace and quiet for now!

Starting on Monday 12th September 2022, Year 5 will have two weeks of daily swimming lessons at Castle Leisure Centre.

We can't wait to see how amazing you all are and how much you improve over the two weeks!

Remember your swimming things on Monday!
