KS2 Eco Club

Welcome to the St. Marie's Key Stage 2

Eco Club webpage!

We are an Eco School and are

Green Flag Award holders!

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING - WaterAid

As part of our Green Flag Award, we decided to raise money for WaterAid and our own Eco Club water saving projects.

On WORLD WATER DAY (22nd March 2024), the whole school either dressed in blue or wore something blue and donated £1 each.

Half of the money we raised will go to WaterAid and the other half will be used by Eco Club to buy a water butt and ollas to help us conserve and reuse water in our school.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING - Dogs Trust

Last year, the Dogs Trust came into our school and told us all about how to care for dogs and how to keep safe around them.

We have a HUGE 'School Dog' outside Mr McRae's office, which we though needed naming!

We decided to hold a fund raising event to collect money for the Dogs Trust.

Eco Club's Trip to the Laudato Si Centre

Eco club were lucky enough to spend the morning at the Laudato Si Centre at Wardley Hall.  The centre is an education and outreach mission that generates environmental hope, rooted in the belief that we can all make a difference through the actions we take.

We visited the gardens and woodland and were inspired with more ideas of how we can follow Pope Francis’ call to ‘Care for Our Common Home’ in school.

We will take action through our Green Flag award work and implement these ideas over the coming months.

THE BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH

We took part in the Big garden Birdwatch and watched out and recorded all the birds we saw for 1 hour.  We then submitted our results on the RSPB website and these will be counted up, along with the other, nationwide results.

The overall results will be release mid-April!

THE FEAST DAY OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

St. Francis of Assisi is the Patron Saint of animals.

To celebrate his feast day, which is 4th October every year, we decided to look after our local wildlife.

Last year was such a success, that we decided to make bird feeders again.  We will hang them up in our outdoor classroom area.

We hope the birds enjoy them!

BEAUTIFUL!

St. Marie’s - early one morning!

AUTUMN IS HERE!

Look at our beautiful trees on the Key Stage 1 playground changing colour.  They are just stunning!

Keep checking them to see how they change!

2021-2022

SUNFLOWERS FOR UKRAINE

HABITAT HUNT

We took a stroll around the school grounds to see what habitats we have.  We realised that there are many more than we thought!

We then researched more habitats and have lots of plans to introduce more in the future!

Here are some of the habitats we found ...

BIRD FEEDERS FOR ALEXANDER CARE HOME AND ST. MARIE'S RC PRIMARY SCHOOL

We made some bird feeders, using lard, bird seed, apples and sunflower seeds.  We shared them with our friends at Alexander Care Home!

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

We collected lots of natural objects from the school grounds and used them to make eco friendly Christmas decorations - the glitter is even bio-degradable!

WILDLIFE AREA

We want to develop this part of the school grounds into a wildlife area.  Here we are having a look around to see what we already have and what ideas we can come up with to develop it!

We had a visit from a gardener, who looked at the area we want to develop into our wildlife area, listened to our ideas and gave us lots of other, really exciting ideas!

BRITISH WILDLIFE COMPETITION

We entered a British wildlife competition - here are some of our entries!

Good luck and happy bird spotting!

KS2 Eco Clubs have been hard at work making bird feeders ready for the winter.

Seed planting - Eco club have planted flowers seeds in egg boxes to grow seedlings that we can plant out in Spring. We are also have a friendly competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower... watch this space!

Bird Feeders!

Eco club have been busy making Bird Feeders out of recycled materials. We researched designs and used recycled materials to make our 'Bird Themed' Bird Feeders. We hope the Birds enjoy using them over the cold winter months! Here are some photos.

Eco club had a fantastic time making our own Bug Hotel 'Bug-ingham Palace'! Thank you so much to all the parents and carers who sent in items for us to use. We hope you are as impressed as the bugs who are enjoying their stay!

Eco club have been really busy tidying the inner garden and planting bulbs in our new planter.

We have fish and a very shy frog in our pond.

During the poor weather, Eco Club planted vegetable seeds in our homemade plant pots made from recycled newspaper.  We have just planted out these seedlings so are looking forward to tasting some delicious home-grown vegetables!
